Gareth Bale's final season as a professional soccer player might be this one.

Bale, who is 32 years old, has had a phenomenal career. Real Madrid shattered the global transfer record to get him from Tottenham in 2013, and he has four Champions League championships to his name.

Bale's stay in Madrid has been marred by hostility from fans and media, despite his 106 goals and 67 assists since joining Real for £85.3 million from Spurs.

Bale has made no secret that playing for Wales is his happy spot, despite years of abuse in Spanish stadiums and tabloids.

As a result, his retirement intentions are thought to revolve around the Welsh national team.

Bale is poised to retire from football this summer if Wales fails to qualify for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, according to the London Evening Standard.

Wales will face either Scotland or Ukraine in a one-off qualifying playoff in Cardiff, with the winner earning the 13th and last European berth at Qatar 2022.

Bale's current deal with Real expires at the end of June, and he will be freed.

According to the Standard, if Wales win their World Cup playoff, Bale would look for a new club on a one-year or shorter-term agreement that will keep him until November, before retiring after Qatar 2022 in December.

Bale's agent, Jonathan Barnett, told BBC Sport: "We have not discussed anything yet. Once we know Wales' situation with the World Cup, we will discuss it then."
