The Asian Football Confederation already has five nations qualified for the FIFA World Cup in 2022.

After three rounds of AFC qualification, Qatar gained an automatic berth as hosts, followed by Iran, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea.

Depending on who wins an inter-confederation playoff, the AFC might have six teams in a World Cup for the first time ever.

On June 7, the United Arab Emirates and Australia, who joined the AFC after quitting the Oceania Football Confederation in 2006, will face off in an Asian confederation playoff in Doha.

The winner of that match will face Peru for a spot in Qatar 2022 a week later.

The 2018 World Cup in Russia was the first to feature five Asian countries. Australia, Iran, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea were among them.

Each of the previous five tournaments had included four Asian countries, including the 2002 World Cup, which saw Japan and South Korea qualify as joint hosts.

Prior to 1998, Asia was only represented by two teams at each World Cup.

In Qatar 2022, Europe will contribute 13 of the 32 teams.

Africa has five teams qualified, while South America will have four or five teams, depending on if Peru qualifies.

At least three will come from North America, but the OFC will only be represented in Qatar if New Zealand wins a playoff against Costa Rica.
